Grammer of Film and Television

As every language has its own grammer, Film and Television has its own separate grammer. which comprises of different shots (like words in English), different shots combine together to make a sequence (like sentences in English) and different sequences together make a scene (as different sentences make a paragraph)and different scenes make a screenplay (as different paragraphs make a complete story.

What is Shot?

The footage/ film exposed in a film/ video camera between turning it On and Off is called a shot. In a layman term, when u switch on the camera and record something and then put the camera off.. the footage that is recorded in that moment is called a shot.

Different Shot Sizes:

1) Extreme Close-Up

2) Close Up

3) Mid Close Up

4) Medium Shot

5) Mid Long Shot

6) Long Shot

7) Extreme Long Shot

ANGLES OF SHOT:

1) Low-Angle Shot

2) Eye-Level Shot

3) High-Angle Shot

4) Worm's Eye

5) Canted Shot

6) Bird's Eye

DIFFERENT CAMERA MOVEMENTS:

1)The movement of Camera from Left to Right and Vice Versa is called Panning of
the camera and we read the command as.. Pan Left or Pan Right

2)The movement of the camera Up and Down is called Tilt UP and Tilt Down.

3)Crane Movement is read as Crane up and Crane Down.

4)Track in and Track out: When we move the camera trolley left to right or right
to left, it is called Track in and Track Out..

5)Ped up and Ped Down... when we move the camera physically on a panther dolley up
or down, the command is called ped up and ped down..

That's it for today, rest I'll right in the next blog..

cheers,

syllabus of FTII

Film and Television Institute of India is a pioneer institute in imparting the education in the field of Film and Television.

Many students appear every year but due to the limited student take in, most of them cannot make it to FTII.

Here is the hint of the syllabus of FTII for the preparation of the interested students..

1) Objective type questions of Aesthetics

2) Fill in the blanks and True and False type of technical questions.

3) Match the following.. There will be 5 questions wherein a sentence will be written about a famous personality related to Film and Arts and will have to identify that person by matching the given sentence to the person.

4) Critical examination of any picture (coloured or black & white) with regards to its resolution, exposure, etc. (objective type questions)

5) Questions related to story boarding... there will be 15-20 pictures/ photographs will be given and we need to put that in order to tell a story.. there will be a sequence to that and hence we will arrange the pictures in order..

6) General Knowledge questions related to Film, Arts, Aesthetics, culture and History of cinema..

7) Short notes on.. Digital Intermediate, .wmv/ .wma or .mpg formats, cannes film festival, etc.

8) Mathematical and Reasoning questions (little tough)..

I hope this will help students to crack FTII Exams this year..

FILM VS VIDEO EDITING

I'd like to discuss film editing vs video editing.. generally it is seen that students of cinema or video production likely to get confused when asked this question to them...

Film format has 24 fps whereas video format has 25 fps..

film editing involves the rigorous process of developing the film and then printing it to a new roll and then cutting the film physically.. whereas video editing has two branches.. Linear Editing and Non-Linear Editing.. Non-Linear editing is much more easier if compared to the Linear, as we can pick and choose the shot randomly and even after making the final timeline we can make all the necessary arrangements quickly and expeditiously..

in my other blog I'll discuss Non-Linear and Linear Editing in detail..

cheers...

BRANCHES OF FILMMAKING

There are different branches of filmmaking, i.e., Direction, Cinematography, Editing, Sound Engineering, Screenwriting, Animation and Visual Effects, Special Effects, etc.

Director is usually the captain of the ship, however, filmmaking is a collaborative effort. Its a team work and no one can pull off the process solely.

we start off with an idea then it is further developed into a concept then that concept shapes up as story then comes screenwriting into the picture.

After screenwriting, the actual process of filmmaking starts, when the producer takes a call on who will direct the film.. Director, as rightly mentioned above is the captain of the ship. Director is responsible for execution of what is written in the script with the help of cinematographer and Assistant Directors on the set, however, each crew member is as important as the other. We cannot negate the importance of any person working towards a film, be it a Director or a Spotboy (who serves tea, coffee and stuff).

Then we have the process of after shoot, which is called post-production. An editor creatively handles the process in conjunction with the director. Although, the call is of a director but nevertheless Editor is highly educated, creative and apt in suggesting director the best of cutting the unwanted and keeping the best footage for the film.

we will discuss the process of filmmaking in detail... it was just an overview of the branches of filmmaking, as in, Screenwriting, Direction, Cinematography, Editing and Sound Designing...cheers,
